"Ruff Rock"
Registered Standardbred Gelding
6 yrs old, 15 hh
Available through the Standardbred Rehoming Program
Adoption Fee: $5,000
Ruff Rock is an absolutely gorgeous, and very nicely built Standardbred gelding that came directly off-the-track. He was well cared for his entire life, and needed a second career.
Ruff Rock needed to be retired from racing after developing a bowed tendon during his training. He came to Lucky 7 Horse rescue in 2025 to begin his rehab. His injury was monitored by the fabulous vets at Anoka Equine Veterinary Services, and then he was cleared for full riding work! The vets say the only things he shouldn't do is harness racing or high-level jumping. Other than that, he should be a fantastic riding (or driving) partner!
Ruff Rock has taken to riding very well! He has just finished 30 days under saddle and is a great boy to be around! He is super smooth and shows some serious athleticism!
He is very light in the bridle, and has a much smoother way of moving than is usual for a Standardbred. He could really do anything! Extreme trail, ranch riding, cow work, you name it!
If you're looking for the beginner-friendly, cool calm and collected, classic Standardbred then Ruff Rock may not be your guy but if you want something you can be competitive on and be able to hop around in different disciplines then this is your guy!
The USTA has a Standardbred Incentive Program with year-end awards if you want to dabble in some shows, but if you aren't a huge show person and just want a horse that can do a lot, Ruff Rock is the guy!
Lucky 7 Horse Rescue offers a Standardbred Rehoming Program for owners to safely rehome their retiring racehorses in a way that acknowledges the value of their horses. Off-the-track Standardbreds come with a lot of excellent handling and care, and are extreme athletes. When they are working, they are all “business mode”. When their harness is off, however, they show their goofy personalities! Every Standardbred has their unique set of goofy quirks - some like to twirl their heads, others like to stick their tongues out, and even more like to wiggle their lips! Like most Standardbreds, Ruff Rock comes with these wonderful qualities:
✅Stands tied
✅Cross-ties
✅Trailers like a champ
✅Good for farrier
✅Stands for baths
✅UTD on everything
Standardbreds offered through our Standardbred Rehoming Program are NOT rescues. They have been loved and cared for their entire lives, valued as race horses. The Standardbred Rehoming Program exists to give horse owners the option to safely rehome their off-the-track Standardbreds in a way that acknowledges the value of their horses. Many of these horses would be sold for double or triple the price to go work on rural farms, as they are valued by those communities as working animals and transportation.
When adopting a horse in our Standardbred Rehoming Program, half of the fee goes to the previous owner of the horse, and half goes directly into getting two or three Standardbreds away from the hard work of working on rural farms.
